What to Wear Under a Graduation Gown (Men & Women)

The two rules that cover most decisions

1. Dress for the temperature you'll actually be in — often a crowded, warm room or direct sun. Lightweight and breathable beats formal-but-sweltering.
2. Assume the gown will open or be removed for photos afterward. What's underneath will be seen, so choose an outfit you'd happily be photographed in.

For women

• A simple dress or a blouse with tailored pants or a skirt works well; a solid color that complements (not clashes with) your gown photographs best.
• Necklines: a modest, higher neckline sits better under a gown and honor cords or stoles than a deep V.
• Avoid anything that peeks out awkwardly below the gown hem — keep skirts and dresses shorter than the gown or choose pants.

For men

• A collared shirt (with or without a tie) and dress pants is the standard; a light shirt keeps you cooler than a full suit jacket under the gown.
• Skip the jacket in most cases — a gown over a blazer is hot and adds bulk.
• Dark, breathable trousers photograph cleanly below the gown hem.

Shoes matter more than you think

You'll stand, line up, walk across a stage, and often cross grass or gravel. Choose shoes you can walk and stand in for hours. For anyone in heels, a lower block heel is far safer than a stiletto on a stage or lawn — and wedges handle grass better than thin heels. Break new shoes in beforehand; graduation day is the wrong time for blisters.

Don't forget the regalia layer

Your gown isn't the last layer — honor cords, a stole, or a medal go on top, and they read in every photo. Plan your outfit and your regalia together so the colors coordinate. If you've earned honors, wear them proudly; they're the clearest signal of your achievement on stage.

Small comforts that save the day

• Bobby pins or clips to keep your cap secure (and a mirror to set it at the right angle).
• A safety pin or two in case a gown snap or zipper gives out.
• Water and, for outdoor ceremonies, sunscreen and a hand fan.
